Nation celebrates disability prevention and rehabilitation week

QUEZON CITY, July 17 (PIA) -- The National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation (NDPR) Week is being celebrated July 17 to 23 under the auspices of the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) and the Department of Justice as the Chair of the event’s national working committee.

This year’s celebration adopts the theme, “Building an Inclusive and Non-Handicapping Environment for Persons with Disabilities,” which aims to promote the principles and practices on equal participation of persons with disabilities in the society and the mainstreaming of disability agenda in the programs of government agencies, non-government organizations, and other concerned stakeholders.

During this weeklong celebration, different activities have been lined-up to include: (1) Walk for Justice; (2) Thanksgiving and Holy Mass; (3) Inauguration of PWD Assistance Desk in the Hall of Justice; (4) Launching of the Sensitivity Training for Prosecutors; and (5) Legal Clinic by the Quezon City Pubic Attorney’s Office.

Other activities are: (1) Medical, Dental, and Mobility Clinic Mission; (2) PWD Product Conference; (3) Forum on “10 Goals to Make the Right Real”; (4) Awarding of the First Mabini Batangan Awards; (5) “Paligsahan ng May Kapansanan sa Kasaysayan at Kultura ng Pilipinas”; (6) Apolinario Mabini Wheelchair Parade; (7) Sculpture/Poster-Making Contest for Children; (8) Realizing the Rights of Children with Disabilities through Access to Justice; (9) PARM M.O.V.E. Pilipinas Run 2013 Manila-Tacloban-Davao; (10) Fun Day for Children with Disabilities; (11) Showcase of Artworks of Persons with Autism; (12) Forum on Training and Employment Programs/Projects of DOLE, TESDA, ECC, and DTI; (13) Commemoration of Mabini’s Birthday; (14) Third APC Para Tenpin Bowling Open Championship Manila 2013; (15) Diagnosis of Children Suspected to have Developmental Disabilities; (16) Enrichment Seminar on the Rights of Soldiers with Disability; and (17) Workshop Training for Advancee Wheelchair Assessment.

A “Mega Disability Sensitivity Campaign” which is expected to gather more than a thousand participants at the Music Hall of SM Mall of Asia on July 23, will culminate this year’s NDPR Week which will include a press conference on inclusive election for persons with disability.

Regional and local NDPR Week celebrations are also expected to be held all throughout the country through the mobilization and support of the Regional Committees on Disability Affairs; regional offices of government line agencies; local government units and its persons with disability affairs and social welfare and development offices; non-government organizations and the private sector; local media; and organizations of and for persons with disabilities.

To boost this year’s observance, Executive Secretary Paquito N. Ochoa Jr. issued Memo Circular No. 50 dated July 9, 2013, enjoining all government agencies and instrumentalities to support the nationwide observance of the NDPR Week.
