Volunteers are needed to help out at this year's Halberg Junior Disability Games, taking place in Cambridge from April 22-24. The national three-day sports competition organised by the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation is open to eight to 21 year olds with a physical disability or visual impairment. Athletes compete in regional teams across 19 sports, including athletics, blind cricket, rowing, boccia, goalball and wheelchair basketball. Volunteers are needed for one or all of the three days. They are required to assist with sports events and with co-ordinating the athletes, teams and accommodation. Over 100 athletes are expected to attend the sports festival style event, which will start with an opening ceremony at the Avantidrome and lead into three days of sports, fun and competition. The games will be held at St Peter's School from Friday to Sunday, April 22 to 24. Volunteering at the games is seen as an opportunity to support physically disabled young people to participate in a range of sports and give back to the community. The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation is a charity that was founded by Sir Murray Halberg in 1963, based on the belief that all New Zealanders should have access to sports. The Foundation employs disability sports advisers around the country who connect physically disabled people to sport and recreation opportunities in clubs, schools, and in their communities, and also provides grants for adaptive sports equipment.
