THURSDAY’S SANFL match between Norwood and North Adelaide will be dedicated to people with a disability and the organiser hopes it will eventually lead to a themed AFL round.

Former Redlegs premiership player and Dignity for Disability party president Rick Neagle is the force behind the “Count Me In” game, which builds on a round of the same name in the West Australian Football League.

The game at Norwood Oval will have a particular focus on autism, a condition his son, Mitchell, 15, lives with.

Mr Neagle says the timing of the game, coinciding with the rollout of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, is “perfect”.

“People say (disability funding) is fixed now but everyone who works in this area or has a disability knows it’s just the beginning,” he says.

Mr Neagle hopes the SANFL will include a Count Me In round in next’s fixture and then the AFL will adopt it the following year.

“This is a perfect platform from WA to SA to Melbourne,” he says.

Norwood Football Club chief executive Geoff Baynes says the Redlegs were keen to get involved when Mr Neagle approached them.

“We need to assist the community to understand the needs of different disabled groups and doing it through our game, which will be telecasted, is one way we can assist in that,” Mr Baynes says.

The match starts at 7.10pm on Thursday, August 13.

Entry: adults $14, concession $8, children under 18 free.
